DISCOURSE MARKER is a fancy term for the filler words and phrases we commonly use when we tell a narrative of any kind. They're like a type of spoken punctuation used to mark new paragraphs, important parenthetical details, our own feelings about certain parts of the narrative, etc. They basically make your English more expressive and interesting.
