This story of survival and hope has never ceased to inspire me. The waters eventually receded, Lizzie eventually rebuilt her house and her life, the city of New Orleans eventually recovered, and Rocky lived another five years. Hurricane Katrina showed me how resilient, resourceful and strong people and animals can be. I'd never had a dog before Katrina. But after what happened with Rocky, I never looked at dogs the same way again. And when I left Louisiana and moved to Florida, I got my own dog, Coco… but that’s a story for another blog.
